Commenting on figures that show the UK economy contracted by 0.5% in the second quarter, Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg said:
This confirmation that we are heading for a recession puts a name to the fear that many people have been feeling for months.
With millions of people worrying about how they will afford to get through the next six months, we may well be on the edge of a new winter of discontent.
These growth figures show that the credit crunch is hitting the real economy and harder and faster than was first feared.
Gordon Brown consistently failed to listen to the Liberal Democrats when we warned him that borrowing was getting out of control. We must now take radical action to restore confidence and take the economy back into the black.
The Government needs to cut taxes for those on low and middle incomes, while the Bank of England must make a further cut in interest rates to help families struggling to make ends meet.”

Nick,
Never before have the Liberal Democrats said anything that interested me. How things have changed! Your stance on ID Cards, the EU, Energy, and the restoration of civil liberties are all major issues, and ones only the Liberal Democrats have got right.
I am supprised, and yet delighted that my views on such major issues are actually supported by a political party. Congratulations on your intelligent, and reasoned policies, you have my full support.
Now there is a reason to vote!
